[ MUSIC ] I've been a photographer from Washington D. C since the mid 1970's. In the first year of. Bill Clinton's presidency. I went on an assignment with a reporter for TIME to interview Mrs. Clinton. I was not familiar with either one of them until I saw them walk into the White House. And I was dumbstruck at how young they looked. [ MUSIC ] My assignment was to try and peel the onion a little bit. The cover of my new book, Hillary. Is a photograph that was on the cover of Time magazine in 1996, and it was taken up in Ryebrook, New York, and I love the fact that she's kinda biting her lip. I've led the book.

With a picture of Hilary. I believe she was on a tour. All of a sudden she stopped the motorcade and she went into some kind of ice cream parlor and she came out. She's waving and you look down in her hand and there she's got this big ice cream cone. And I thought, oh, how perfect. It just seemed to me, it was so free. I loved the picture of the First Lady in a baseball cap. The baseball cap is usually saved for the President. I like the way she looked at him and. And he looked at her. This isn't anything behind the scenes or special, but that's how they're related to each other. And I saw and I shot it.

On January 20th, 1997, the second Clinton inaugural. I don't think Mrs. Clinton had seen Chelsea outfit that she was gonna wear that day. I saw Chelsea open her coat and then I noticed the kind of turn that Mrs. Clinton made. And I had to laugh out loud. There isn't a mother in this world who doesn't know what was going on. Every mother knows that moment. Look at the length of that skirt. [ LAUGH ] When I photograph behind the scenes [ MUSIC ] I hardly ever spoke to them unless spoken to. And my reason for not talking them was that I was not there for myself and I wanted them to ignore me. If they spoke to me it broke the spell of watching what they were doing with other people and interacting.

Hilary Clinton, it seems to me means a lot to women today. She in a way represents the opportunities for women. I never imagined when I first saw Mrs. Clinton where she was gonna go in her life. To have the opportunity to photograph somebody for 20 years is such a gift to a photographer. [ MUSIC ]
