[ INAUDIBLE ] its mustard fields, its home to just a handful of farmers. It also happens to be the childhood home of one of India's most hated men. This is the mud shack were Ram Singh and his younger brother, Mukesh, grew up. They're amongst the six men accused of savagely raping and murdering a 23 year old woman in New Delhi last year. Their trial was under way, but on the morning of March 11th. Ron Sing was found hanging from the roof of his jail cell. His death has stirred little sympathy on the streets of Delhi. According to me, it's great because he should be punished, and it's great that he's realized what he has done to a lady. So I feel it's really good. Sing was the main accused in the December attack which shocked and outraged the nation. His brother Mukesh has also been charged with four others. They're on trial for raping a young student, stripping her, and throwing her off a moving bus on December 16 of last year in New Delhi. She died two weeks later on December 29. Thousands of people poured onto the streets in India to demand justice. Police used tear gas and water canons when crowds surrounded the parliament. What started as spontaneous demonstrations, has since evolved into a wider movement against gender and equality. But despite the public outcry, little is known about the six men accused of one of India's most infamous crimes. [ CROSSTALK ] [ FOREIGN ] To find out more, Christa Moore of Time magazine visited Ramen and Mkesh Sighs home village. [ FOREIGN ] Pombal is inconsolable in his grief. He and his father live just a stones throw away from Raman Makaskay's home in Kuroli district and have known them since they were children. [ FOREIGN ] [ FOREIGN ] Pong says they grew up poor without electricity, running water, or even a toilet. Little has changed today. It's not surprising, then, that Ram and Mukeshten's parents. Decided to move to the bright lights of New Delhi when the boys were just children. But even at that age, they were witness to some harsh realities. Mira Krishna is a district official in [ INAUDIBLE ]. She says violence against women is a way of life here. [ FOREIGN ] [ FOREIGN ] [ FOREIGN ] Like millions before them, the Sings moved into a tiny shack in a Delhi slum. Neighbors say the boys ran wild as the parents struggled to earn money. Many believe the influx of such economic migrants is responsible for the rising crime rate in Delhi. Like Ram Singh, migrant workers mostly come from the ultra- conservative, impoverished interiors of India. They have neither the money nor the social connections to fully belong here. Sociologists believe this feeling of anonymity and isolation emboldens them to commit crimes. Delhi's crime scene is much worse today than it was several years back. It's not because of poverty. Because I think that people were poorer then. It's rather because a number of people have now decent city life, have enough money, but not that much to satisfy the ambitions and passions, so there's the [ INAUDIBLE ] of being able to touch and grasp and that is why they often turn to violence. [ SOUND ] Add to this, the weak policing and rule of law. And you have a society where there's very little fear of punishment. Of the 635 reported rapes in Delhi last year, there was only one conviction. Given this culture of impunity, it's likely that the men who committed the December rape thought they could simply fade into the masses here And never get caught [ SOUND ] but no one could have anticipated the ferocity of the public's reaction. [ FOREIGN_LANGUAGE ] There is something deeper to this collective anger. These protesters are fighting not just against Ram Singh and his co- accused but against traditional values that keep women in traditional roles. As long as they were behaving themselves in the kitchen, and, you know, raising children and running around barefoot it was fine. But now that they're doing these things, and though they're not actually challenging men, but because they're there doing things, demanding certain things, you know, as rights I may not beginning to get angry and upset. The young rape victim was just such a woman. An ambitious physiotherapist student who dreamt of traveling the world. [ MUSIC ] Many have welcomed Sees death as a divine justice. But others feel it is a hollow victory. [ MUSIC ] [ NOISE ] Protestors are demanding the swift acts of. [ SOUND ] Prosecution of the remaining defendants.
