## Transcript

In a country split by deep political divisions, the army has now taken control. Thailand's army declared martial law early Tuesday morning posting soldiers at inner sections and pulling tanks to the streets of Bangkok. Military officials insist the move is not a coup d'etat but an attempt to ensure law and order amid deep political riffs and protests that have, at times, become violent. The move comes two weeks after Thailand's constitutional court ordered the removal of caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra. Her supporters, Thailand's Red Shirt protesters, call her removal a judicial coup.

They swarmed the streets calling for the removal of the current caretaker government. The anti- government yellow shirts also call for a new government, but not through elections, not before widespread reform. They believe Shinawatra was a puppet for her brother, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted in a military coup in 2006, a leader favored by the red shirts. The army shut down TV and radio stations on Tuesday, saying it wanted to quote, prevent any distortions, which could lead to misunderstandings and ensure that information will be distributed rightly. U. S. State Department spokeswoman Jen Sachi issued a statement reading in part, we remain very concerned about the deepening political crisis in Thailand and urge all parties to respect democratic principles, including respect for freedom of speech.
