## Transcript

Ahead of Super Bowl 59 on February 9th in New Orleans between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs. Let's talk for a moment about sports gambling. More than $1.5 billion is expected to be bet on the Super Bowl this year, which would make it the highest betting day in American sports history. Last year, $150 billion was bet by Americans on sports. Up 24% over 2023. Sports gambling is exploding in popularity. The advertising is everywhere. Commercials. Celebrities Kevin Hart, LeBron James, the Manning brothers have become gambling pitchmen encouraging you to sign up for companies like DraftKings and FanDuel.

Since 2018, when the Supreme Court cleared the way for legalized sports gambling, 38 states and Washington, D.C. have made sports betting legal. It's easier than ever to bet on sports on your phone, not only on the results of events, on things like who's going to score the next touchdown, how many rebounds will a certain player have? How fast is this next pitch going to be? Micro betting, prop betting. It's everywhere. And this is starting to come with consequences. Risks of addiction. Recent research has found that in states with legalized sports gambling, bankruptcy risk is increased, as is depletion of savings, and even intimate partner violence is more likely to happen in states with sports betting.

When the home team loses. Enter Richard Daynard. In a recent time profile, I interviewed Daynard, a law professor at Northeastern University who crafted legal strategies to sue Big Tobacco in the 1980s and 90s. He's taking a similar strategy against sports betting, crafting a lawsuit against DraftKings and helping write a congressional law that is now in the House that would greatly regulate the industry and perhaps curtail addiction. Dana's work is going to be worth watching in 2025. Here's a safe bet come Super Bowl Sunday. There's going to be plenty of money on the line.
