I've never been a big fan of Archie Andrews, that tic- tac- toe headed hero of Riverdale High. I did cut my teeth on the Archie comic books though, when I was a girl I collected over 400 of them. I spent my allowance and babysitting money on them every week and I would read them over, and over and over again. I wanted to live in Riverdale High. I wanted to hang out at Pop Tate's Malt Shop, I wanted to be a citizen of that innocent world. But Archie himself-- Archie never seemed like the brightest bulb in the box to me and he's proven this by his recent decision to cross over to the dark side and pop the question to Veronica Lodge, the rich and manipulative brunette. Everyone knows blonde Betty is the one you take home to mom. She can fix cars and casseroles, she's the one who's loved you all these years Archie, what were you thinking? The only reason I would even go to the wedding is to see Archie's best man, Jughead. I've always been more of a Jughead girl. Jughead was smart, he was fast, I liked his goofy hat. And unlike Archie who was always flip- flopping between Betty and Veronica, we always knew where Jughead stood. He didn't like girls except his friends. He liked hamburgers, he liked to sleep, he loved Hot Dog, his shaggy mutt above all else. Jughead was this harmless androgynous boy whose very indifference to girls is what attracted them. It certainly worked for me. Sometimes I would daydream about being the one girl Jughead would fall for. We'd live together in a beautiful house with Hot Dog and we'd eat a lot, and we'd sleep a lot and-- we'd probably end up giving love advice late at night at the kitchen table to Archie. Archie, what are you thinkin'? The Archie- Veronica wedding is a six issues storyline and a lot can happen in Riverdale in six issues. Archie fans online are suggesting all sorts of scenarios. Betty cutting Veronica's braids on the way to the church, Archie getting conked on the head and coming to his senses. And the latest news is that Archie is going to propose to Betty too, talk about your flip- floppin'. I hope Archie, and Veronica and Betty are happy. You won't see me crashing the wedding or wishing them bad luck. Now if Jughead were getting married, that's a different matter. I might have to be the one person in the church that speaks up when the preacher asks if anybody has got an objection. Or maybe I'll just storm the church like Dustin Hoffman in 'The Graduate'-- I'd take Jughead away, we'll head out of town and we'd start a whole new life together.
