## Transcript

In September, President Mahmoud Abbas submitted an application for a state of Palestine to be recognized as a member of the United Nations. [ SOUND ]. While the diplomatic battles rage elsewhere, Israelis who live on the controversial settlements of the West Bank are trained by the army to protect their homes. [ FOREIGN ] In this exercise residents train to meet the danger posed by a Palestinian gunman infiltrating their settlement. [ FOREIGN ] [ FOREIGN ] Their volunteer task force intervention unit gives the first response until the Israeli military can take over. Anticipation was so heightened during these weeks, that the very word September became a commonly- used term for what might happen next.

[ FOREIGN ] [ FOREIGN ] Israel began settling citizens in the occupied west bank in the late 1960s. Despite the UN Security Council in 1980 declaring such settlements illegal, these communities have grown from small outposts into well appointed modern suburbs. And people who have lived here for decades are committed to keeping their way of life. [ FOREIGN ] Though it appears to be business as usual in the settlement of Beth El. Security officers are preparing for what they fear will follow the move by their Palestinian neighbors to seek U. N. recognition as a state. The Israeli Army has been meeting with settler representatives, to brief them on an operation it calls Summer Seeds, in preparation for possible clashes.

[ FOREIGN ] [ FOREIGN ] But here in this control room in the region of Binyamin, people say that they doubt the region will be swept into another round of violence. [ FOREIGN ] [ FOREIGN ] [ FOREIGN ] But the civilians volunteer fighters are preparing for all eventualities. [ FOREIGN ] [ FOREIGN ] [ FOREIGN ] [ FOREIGN ] [ FOREIGN ] [ INAUDIBLE ]
