## Transcript

Wednesday Amazon announced a full refresh of its tablet line, issuing new versions of its Kindle e- readers and Fire tablets. The basic Kindle, which retails for as little as $ 79 with the built- in ads Amazon calls special offers, now has touch. The new high- end reader is a $ 200 Kindle called Voyage, which bumps up the resolution of its E- Ink display, and covers it with a new textured glass panel Amazon says actually feels a bit like paper. There's a kid- focused version of the Fire HD tablet which a high impact case and a two- year no questions asked warranty. Six and seven inch versions of the standard Fire HD with new colors and a price tag starting below $ 100, and a new flag chip fire HDX with hardware upgrades Amazon is pitching directly against Apples I- Pad.

The timing would support that comparison. Fast Company suggests Amazon's trying to get a headstart on any tablets Apple might be set to announce in the near future. And beyond simply beating Apple to the punch, industry watcher say Amazon is getting more diversive with its hardware and filling the knockaround niche Apple hasn't. Of the new Fire HD, The Verge says it's in that zone where nobody has been able to adequately challenge Apple's iPod touch. It's cheap enough to buy and hand to a child or a teenager, durable enough to be battered, and fast enough to not make you want to test that durability by chucking it across the room in frustration.

Apple for its part has made its tablet update announcements in October for the past two years. The blogs are pointing to a repeat for this year where Apple is expected to show off new versions of the iPad and iPad Mini. October also happens to be when Amazon intends to start shipping its new readers and tablets. It's taking preorders on its website now.
