## Transcript

Amazon now wants to cash in on anyone buying from small businesses and the company is doing it in a very Amazony way. The company introduced Amazon Local Register, a direct competitor to mobile card readers like Square, that let small businesses do checkout through smart phones and tablets. With Amazon Local Register you get paid faster and save more money with every swipe. And that's the line that's probably getting the most attention. While most businesses pay credit cards processing costs in the neighborhood of 2 %, online stores, or card- not- present business that have to assume more liability typically get charged 2.

3 to 2. 5 %. Square charges 2. 75 %. Amazon, 1. 75 % for the next year and a half. That's a full point below Square. That's going to get some small business owners' attention. That's incredible. I mean, these guys are the cotton gin to the wound industry. No doubt, Square and PayPal can't be terribly thrilled with the new product. Though Tech Crunch gave Local Register the caveat. Depending on how aggressively Amazon decides to go after winning over users of its competing services. Local register cost $ 10 though Amazon says it will essentially erase that by waiving the first ten bucks of processing fees.
