## Transcript

>> Tom Brokaw is battling cancer. The 74- year- old newsman said he's suffering from a multiple myeloma, a cancer that affects blood cells in the bone marrow since last summer. He was diagnosed at the Mayo Clinic in August. Brokaw announced his diagnosis through a statement posted to the NBC News website calling himself the luckiest guy he knows. " With exceptional support of my family, medical team, and friends, I'm very optimistic about the future and look forward to continuing my life, my work, and adventures still to come. I am very grateful for the interest in my condition, but I also hope everyone understands I wish to keep this a private matter ." Sanjay Gupta discussed the diagnosis with Anderson Cooper over on CNN comparing Brokaw's cancer to leukemia and lymphoma.

>> Yeah, you know, look, this is serious cancer. I mean, there's no specific cure for it tend-- it very much depends on what stage its caught and how someone is responding to therapy. That it's a long process and it's an involved process.

>> Still Brokaw's co- worker and friend, Brian Williams, confirmed that Brokaw has got a positive attitude on Tuesday's edition of NBC Nightly News.

>> In an email tonight, Tom mentioned at least the possibility of joining the Springsteen Tour in Australia just to give Bruce a bump of some added publicity.

>> Brokaw, of course, served as anchor of NBC Nightly News until 2004 when he stepped down to become a special correspondent for the network. He is still filing report with NBC some of which will air during the Olympics this month. Thanks for watching. I'm Brice Sander.
