## Transcript

>> When the indie rock band Grizzly Bear took the stage at the Central Presbyterian Church in Austin, they played for one of the most polite crowds at this year's South by Southwest Music Festival.

>> It's a relief to be able to play a show at South by Southwest where people are sitting down and paying attention and that was really great because a lot of the shows here are just parties.

>> May be it was out of reverence for the space but more likely, it was the lull of the chords, the crooning melodies and rich harmonies, the in no hurry tempos that are the trademark of this Brooklyn band's music. It's no surprise the band has found itself playing in churches before.

>> We've done a lot of recording in a church. I feel like we just always end up in churches where we are. It's really the sanctity that always makes us drink beer and the late shows.

>> We've actually played a bunch of churches in Philly. Actually, we played a number of churches now so I feel like the nervousness of the sanctity of it isn't there anymore and-- since we- we're not like, oh, God, there's a cross behind us but-

>> This gig was one of the most buzzed about shows at South by Southwest this year. Grizzly Bear played songs from its new release, Veckatimest, one of the year's most raved about new indie albums. The band released the album in late May but a Lo- Fi version had already leaked under the web months earlier.

>> It's the name of a small uninhabited island. We recorded in three locations. One of which was my grandma's [ unk ] house on Cape Cod nearish the water and I got interested in like the topography there and saw some of these little specks of islands that are uninhabited and I liked the name, it is an old Native American name for it and it's just was really pretty and untouched so. We've spent time in the region before so the name for us brought up positive memory's.

>> Tied it together.

>> Tied it together and -[ unk ] calling the name the album Cape Cod.

>> Yeah, we actually called it

>> We called it, setting a little more specific and mysterious so.

>> The first single and video from Veckatimest has the four band members [ unk ] with the creepy distorted faces as boys sitting in and I'm sensing a pattern here, a church. Grizzly Bear is not your average bear among indie bands. It's trajectory to a bigger audience started by touring with bands like Radiohead. They've debutted songs on late night TV. They've played sold out shows with major orchestras. And in late May, Grizzly Bear played two concerts at New York's town hall to kick off a nationwide tour for their album, a testament to how big the band's following has become since they played very small venues just a few years ago.

>> We played at the diner here.

>> The diner was in Minnesota or something.

>> Minnesota. People were like eating.

>> Like tuna melts.

>> It was like practically a Denny's but not.

>> Yeah. It was basically the local Denny's.

>> Oh yeah, a barn.

>> That was amazing.

>> In exchange in- for two people in exchange for a place to sleep in Oklahoma.

>> Yeah.

>> The guy was like a fan.

>> Fans are hoping Veckatimest will move Grizzly Bear up from well- regarded indie band to big haul success and they're on their way. Veckatimest debutted at number 8 on the US billboard top 10, the first appearance on the billboard chart for Grizzly Bear. It's not the kind of music that will pack a stadium but look for Grizzly Bear to play in a theater or perhaps a church near you later this year. For time. com, this is Craig Duff.
