Scientists have tried for years to make not just prosthetics that can do tasks and grab objects, but feel them. Now European researchers believed they've done just that for the first time. >> Dennis Sorensen of Denmark had his left hand blown off in a fireworks accident 10 years ago. He was fitted with a new robotic arm and could tell the difference between a bottle, a baseball, and a Mandarin orange. >> Researchers unveiled the test results for the Lifehand 2 prototype Wednesday. They say Sorensen can feel what the robotic hand touches through electrodes implanted in his arm. >> The sensor of the robotic prosthesis generates information which is processed by a computer and sent through a stimulator to the electrodes implanted in the nerves. From here they reached Dennis's peripheral nervous system and then his brain. >> Researchers say all that happen so fast the human brain can't tell the difference between the computer sending a message and actual touch. Sorensen, as you might imagine, is a believer. >> Suddenly I could feel something that I haven't been feeling for 9 years. My kids they thought it was-- it was cool. They even called me the cable guy. >> Scientists say the big difference between Lifehand 2 and Lifehand 1 is this prototype is actually implanted onto the test subject's arm instead of connected by electrodes.
