But what you may not know is that there is also a significant economic gap between wealthy black families and wealthy white families, a gap that has stayed constant for the past 30 years. If you're black and your net worth is about $ 347, 000, you're in the top 5 % of black Americans. If you're white, you're only in the top 28 % of white Americans. According to a recent report by. Credit Suisse and Brandeis University's Institute on Assets and Social Policy net income at that level of network is substantially different as well. If a black family has a net worth of $ 347, 000, their net income is probably around 100 grand per year. A white family with that net worth however, probably earns $ 83, 000 more. So almost double that. Income and net worth are not the only differences. The top 5 % of top white and black households allocate their money quite differently. Wealthy black families prefer safer investments like CDs, saving bonds, and life insurance. Instead of stocks and higher risk investments. Perhaps that's because only 7 % of black families receive an inheritance to fall back on, when 36 % of white families receive an inheritance, not to mention white families' inheritances are about 10 times larger. Wealthy black families own more real estate than comparative white families. Nearly twice as much of their non- financial assets are in non- primary real estate.
