We're out here on this Saturday in the eastern city of France which is known as the champagne capital of the world. This is also where the socialist party's 75th congress is being held. The order of the day is to elect a new party leader. The reason that's proving a little bit more difficult than anybody would like is because the next party leader is quite probably gonna be the next socialist presidential candidate to take on Nicolas Sarkozy, the conservative incumbent in 2012. So we're gonna give you a look into this. It's not American politics. It's not GOP or Democratic campaigns with balloons and it's certainly not historical into the nature that Barack Obama's victory was, but it is a lot of fun because frankly other people are being really unpleasant with one another and we always like to see that. -[ Foreign Language ] >> Oh, that's pretty harsh. So where are the negative passions coming from? Well, in part from the rousing speeches by socialist leaders who are seeking to deny where all the top spot. This is Paris' Mayor Bertrand Delanoë. He's less excited about which of the contenders actually gets the leadership jobs so long as it's not the way out. That testiness was evident elsewhere. Here's former Culture Minister Jack Lang blowing me off because he doesn't like my contrasting Barack Obama success selling a center- left platform in the US and the socialist failure to do so here. -[ Foreign Language ] >> But others are willing to address the question. >> In France, the old political spectrum is of course more leftist than in the US and today in fact it's not to go to the center, is to move rather more to the left, not being leftist because we are a social Democrat party. >> But many party faithful countered that recapturing national power relies precisely on the return to socialist Orthodox. -[ Foreign Language ]. >> Struggling over the party's future is pretty heavy stuff. Luckily there is somewhere socialists are gonna chill out. >> This is kind of turning out to be something like a collision between the political convention, ROTC recruiting party, a science fair, and a book club convention or something. >> You got a socialist party necktie. You need your socialist party can and some socialist party bottle opener and your socialist party lighter. >> Once ideologically correct shopping is over, it's back to figuring out how to make the socialist party relevant again. -[ Foreign Language ] >> But wait a minute. That sounds like Barack Obama, the Democrats in the US all over again. -[ Foreign Language ] >> In the end, party members opted for Martine Aubry, the architect of France's now defunct 35- hour work week. She's a compromise between world centrism and the socialist party's hard left flank.
