They used to call it the capital of the revolution, the uprising is over there now. Rebels have buckled under the enormous pressure they've been under. Unofficially, the Syrian army refers to its siege tactics as surrender or starve. As Time reports, rebels, their families and other civilians trapped inside the old city section of homes were reduced to eating insects, grass or whatever else they could grow. Media outlets have begun reposting this video as anti- government activists documented the evacuation on several large green buses. In all, at least 2, 000 people were expected to get driven out of the city into the countryside, where rebels said they plan to re- join other anti- regime forces. But the evacuation is still seen as a huge victory for President Bashar al- Assad, as the Syrian Army effectively takes back one of the most important cities in the country. The fighting in the three plus years since the rebellion against Assad's government has left much of homes in ruins. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights estimates the brutal rebellion and government crackdown has killed more than 150, 000 people so far, many of those being civilians. The crisis nearly became an international military conflict last year after more than 1, 000 died in a chemical weapons attack both Assad and the rebels blame each other for. The move to evacuate rebel fighters from homes comes just a month before Syrian elections with Assad expected to win in a landslide. Rebels call the election a charade. Back to the evacuation, one anti- regime activist told Time, yes, rebels have been granted safe passage to the countryside, but they are simply going from one area of death to another. The regime will just finish them off with air strikes.
