[ MUSIC ] Starting next week over a billion people will be eligible to vote. More than 800 million of them in India, and nearly 200 million of them in Indonesia. These two countries in recent years have been identified as major emerging economies. Because of their sheer populations alone, as well as some economic reforms by their previous leaders, India and Indonesia are seen as engines of growth for entire regions, for all of Asia and Southeast Asia, as well as major consumers for products from around the world. In India's election the choice for voters is between the Congress party, which has ruled the country for two terms. Started quite well in the first of those two terms, and then lost its way. And the BJP, which is a Hindu nationalist party that is led by a very divisive figure, a man called Narendra Modi, who is a chief minister of the Gujarat state. Has a very strong economic success story behind him. But his policies and his attitudes towards India's minorities make him an unpalatable choice for many Indians. Modi also has had no real national experience, much less international exposure. And that is also the problem for the front runner in Indonesia. Joko Widodo is the governor of Jakarta, the capital. Very charismatic, very successful as a governor but with no national or international experience. The results of these two elections will affect the combined population of this, these countries which is nearly a billion and a half people, which is one in every five people on the planet. So these are elections of enormous consequence. But it's not just Indonesians and Indians who will be affected.
