FBI officials say the boy stowed away in the wheel well of the plane, and somehow survived the more than five hour journey. Aviation experts are dumbfounded. Between the extreme cold and the lack of oxygen at 38, 000 feet, it's truly miraculous the boy's alive. Officials say he was unconscious for most of the flight, and was found wandering the tarmac after the plane landed. A pilot tells Hawaii News Now. He would suffocate, most likely, up there, so I mean it, like I said, it's extremely unlikely that somebody would survive that long up at that altitude. Not to mention temperatures at that altitude are an estimated negative 80 degrees. CNN adds. But that has its benefits in terms of what is does. It preserves the central nervous system. Essentially, most outlets are saying the boy was in a kinda state of preservation. ABC has more. It's possible if you slow down enough, your body doesn't need enough oxygen and you could survive. But it's near impossible. It's almost miraculous. BBC offers more context saying, since records began in 1947, about 100 wheel well stowaways are thought to have attempted to board flights, of whom around three quarters died. But the teen somehow made it with no serious injuries or hypothermia. He's currently with child protective services. It's unclear why he wanted to sneak on board. An FBI spokesman told NBC he was found without identification, but they learned he's a runaway from Santa Clara, California, who hopped aboard after apparently choosing the plane at random. Meaning he snuck onto the tarmac and into the airplane without anyone noticing, which is raising big security concerns. California Representative Eric Swalwell tweeted Sunday night, I have long been concerned about security at our airport perimeters. Stowaway teen demonstrates vulnerabilities that need to be addressed. San Jose police and the FBI are looking into the case. The boy will reportedly not be charged with a crime. Hawaiian Airlines will also assist with the investigation, but it said in a statement, our primary concern now is for the well- being of the boy who is exceptionally lucky to have survived.
