>> It's Jueves Santo or Maundy Thursday in Zipaquirá, Colombia. In this town, famous for its Cathedral of Salt carved out of the salt mines deep under a mountain, a solemn procession above ground marks the last days of the life of Jesus Christ. For Colombians and tourist fortunate enough to be here during Semana Santa or Holy Week, Easter is a time of colorful pageantry and personal reflection. A marching band leaves the parade. Parishioners called Cargueros follow in purple robes carrying crosses and floats with figures of Jesus and the Virgin Mary. The costumes have been the same for centuries and were in use long before the KKK co- opted the style.

>> At the end of the parade, an elder reads the gospels. His voice broadcasts from loudspeakers on top of a car. The mood is at times somber, at other times festive and joyous. Semana Santa activities are a tourism draw throughout South America and Spain. These video and photos were gathered during last year's festivities. For a tourist, the week also offers a kind of serendipity. In Cartagena, what could have been just another tour of a pretty church turned into something so much more when the youth workers [ unk ] began a rehearsal. They practice a rough rendition of Mozart's Coronation Mass in front of the altar.

While others worked out choral parts in the back of the church. Holy Week ceremonies have been performed in Colombia since the 1500s. And the modern witness to the celebrations, no matter what faith they practice, can get a sense of history and a better appreciation for the deeply felt Catholicism of many Colombians.
