## Transcript

>> Advances in technology can come in all shapes and sizes and two new exhibits in London offer ample proof. The Design Museum is showcasing under a Fiver, 89 quirky household products costing less than £ 5 to produce.

>> What it's important to understand that they're not- none of them are inventions. They're all objects which are in some ways,

>> answers to particular situations in culture.

>> And that literally the opposite end of the scale, at the Science Museum, is Dan Dare and the Birth of High- Tech Britain. This exhibit explores the role played by important inventions that helped rebuilt the country after World War II.

>> In the years 1945 to 1970, it's certainly true that Britain was a technological power house. It was- it originated things at an astonishing rate. Most of this

>> technology that was made available was new and was built here.

>> On first glance, these may seem like wildly differing exhibitions but on closer inspection the items in them evoke the spirit of creation and aim of improving allies, thus binding them and us together.

>> We're in a very interesting section of the exhibition, to me personally, because what you see on my right is the breathing equipment used by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay for the first ascent of Everest in 1953.

>> We're looking at something that's uniquely British. This is a Murphy television from Wellingham City, just north of London. And like all the other companies, it was British. And I wanted to remind people again at this " lost world" the British manufacture and design when the television came from a town up the road from you and not from Japan, Korea or China.

>> When you're faced with a situation, we have limited resources, you'd suddenly become extremely inventive.

>> The example of the RyanAir sick bag that

>> doubles as a photo- developing envelope. It's an airline company of such low cost where everything is down to the last penny. Here's an example where the extreme has been taken and actually implemented where a sick bag is seen as something with potential.

>> This is a model of the Vickers Viscount, Britain's most successful Quebesh aircraft. So for the first time, for an affordable cost you could fly to France or Spain or even further. And people

>> started to do this in increasing number. So we're looking at the birth of today's consumer society.

>> Here I've a spoon I found in France where what they did was just chop the end of the spoon off. So it's easy to scrape the bottom of the bowl. By taking off something, or taking a part of something away from something, you actually create something better or something new.

>> Dental equipment, many people before the war forwent dental equipment because they feared the bills

>> and they couldn't afford them. And in fact, the condition of the- of the nation's teeth was quite a notorious subject. And often observed upon by American forces where make camp here during the war.

>> In times of probably a threat that goes through a lot of the objects is that the value of them is often beyond the price that they presented.

>> My view has always been that there's a really basic human creative urge to invent and design and the Britain remains a place where the future is imagined into being.
