## Transcript

The good news is that there are more opportunities to save in tax sheltered accounts for 2015. [ MUSIC ] The challenge, of course, is coming up with the money, since wage growth has been slow and there are more demands on your pocketbook from healthcare and college savings. Savings, but if you can put away a little bit more, every little bit helps. Over the long run, compounding will make that small amount grow to a much larger amount. There's a new account and it's called a MIRA, which is meant to make people think of Ira or IRA. And it's designed for people who are starting out, who aren't already covered by a company retirement plan like a 401 ( k ).

And so it has very low starting initial savings amounts. You can get going with as little as $ 25. And future deposits can be as little as $ 5. The money will go to a guaranteed savings account that's run by the federal government. So you can't lose money on it, and there are no fees. And it works like a Roth IRA. The money is taxed before it goes in, but afterwards, all the future earnings are tax- free. And you can take the money with you when you change jobs. In 2015, you'll be allowed to put more money away in your 401K. The contribution limit has risen by $ 500, so you can put as much as $ 18, 000 into your plan.

And if you are 50 or older, you're eligible for what's known as catch up contributions, which let you put away more and those limits have risen as well. So now you put away as much as $ 6, 000 into your plan on top of the $ 18 thousand. The amounts that you can contribute to an IRA have not changed. You can put away as much as $ 5, 000. But if you're 50 or older you're eligible for those catchup contributions so that means you can put in an additional thousand dollars next year. But the income limits which make you eligible to contribute to an IRA have changed a bit. For a traditional IRA if you're single the limit has moved up to as high as 71, 000 dollars.

And if you're married, if you earn as much as $ 118 thousand, you can contribute to an IRA. [ MUSIC ]
