That's a tricky question to answer. You don't want to tip your hand and maybe lose out on earning a lot more money. But you also don't want to talk yourself out of the running for the job if you're outta the ballpark too. It's a bit of a poker game. The first thing you should do is prepare and find out in advance what the going rate is for that job. You can use PayScale or Glassdoor to do some of the research, but really you're going to de the best information form someone who's worked there recently or someone who's still on the job. Use your network Or use your LinkedIn connections to find somebody who can give you some good insights in the particular salary for that job. There are a couple ways you could deflect the question in the interview. Say you're not ready to talk about salary yet, you wanna know more about the job responsibilities first. Or you can turn the question on it's head. Say you wanna make sure you're in the ballpark for the job, so ask how much is budgeted for that position. If they keep pressing you for an answer, you're gonna have to give a response. You don't wanna seem difficult or you really will be counted out for the job. But remember, there's more to your compensation than just straight salary. You can include bonuses and valuable perks like a 401 ( k ) match, and even the value of your health benefits. So, say your salary is 75, 000 dollars a year, but your benefits add up to another 25, 000. You can feel comfortable saying that your compensation is 100, 000 dollars a year. Now one thing you want to make that sure you don't do is lie or exaggerate your salary. They can do research on you too, so if you aren't honest Well if the interviewer finds that out you're probably not going to get the job.
