## Transcript

Angelina Jolie made the stunning revelation that she has a mutation that puts her at increased risk for breast cancer. In order to reduce her risk, she decided to get a double mastectomy before the first signs of any tumors appeared. Jolie said she learned of her status by getting a genetic test for mutations called BRCA1 and BRCA2, which about 1 % of breast cancer patients have. She obviously isn't the first woman to take advantage of the test, or the first woman to decide to have a double mastectomy, but her stature raises some interesting questions about how genetic testing is now becoming an increasingly important part of cancer care.

Having genetic tests that predict diseases like breast cancer make it very difficult for patients to decide what to do about that risk. The results can be informative, but they can also raise more questions than answers, and that's why doctors suggest that you review them with a genetic counselor who can help you understand and interpret the results, based on the latest science. Jolie said that she hoped that more women would take advantage of the test that she got. The attention her story got should encourage other women to ask about genetic testing and see how much they can help their care and improve their treatment.
