Here's what you need to know about the conflict in the Central African Republic. In March 2013, rebel coalition Seleka, which is predominantly Muslim. Toppled the Christian government and began a campaign of killing and looting. That primarily targeted Christians. Bands of self- defense vigilantes, called the Anti- Balaka, comprising mostly Christians. Have risen up and targeted Muslims across the country. But the interim President and French and regional peacekeepers have struggled to put a stop to lawlessness and ethnic fighting. The United Nations has characterized the displacement of Muslims as an ethnic cleansing. Nearly a quarter of the population has been displaced from their homes. The country has faced chronic instability since it gained independence from France in 1960. But the recent violence has raised concerns of a genocide. 20 years after more than 800, 000 people were killed in Rwanda. Earlier this month, the UN authorized a proposal to send nearly 12, 000 peacekeepers and police to the country. But most of those troops won't be in place until September. Recently, more than 1000 Muslims were evacuated from Bangweed, the capital, by armed international peacekeepers. The scene after the Muslim population evacuated the capital, was a vivid display of the lawlessness and tension in the country. Within minutes of their departure a mob attacked and looted a local mosque. Some shouting, we've cleaned Central African Republic of the Muslims. The UN Secretary General, Ban Ki- moon has called for the international community to put an end to the chaos and violence in the country. Calling it, a hole in the heart of Africa.
