[ MUSIC ] There are so many things you have to think about upon separation that it made me realize how much of a, almost like a security blanket, the military lifestyle provides you. As someone who's transitioned, I would say one Start planning as soon as possible. Pay off your debt, or have a plan to get as much of your debt paid off as possible. And I would suggest that they take advantage of the savings and retirement the DOD is offering at that point in time. Two, I would say, use the military transition seminars as a starting point. Because they're not all encompassing especially when you have a family, so you have to use that as a guide to where to start thinking of everything you're gonna have to address before your transition.

I would say choose your field of study or the career plan you want to take so you can plan around that. Know the resources available to you, post- transition. Connect with one of the veteran service organizations. These organizations exist to make sure that veterans are successful in their transition. The Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America is the leading post- 9 / 11 veterans empowerment organization. At IAVA we have masters level social workers within our Rapid Response Referral Program that assist veterans through a plethora of different transition issues they can be going through. I would say also have a plan a and a plan b.

Have your initial plan and have a contingency If this doesn't work out this is what you know, my options are. So that you're being proactive versus reactive. And lastly, sell yourself and network. Everything that exists outside the military exists in the military. There are service man who have very unique skills that are directly translatable to civilian workforce if we could make The civilian workforce more aware than we would be able to make the transition for veterans a little easier.
