It has been 80 years since the ghost Army landed in France 19 years since I came to this story nine years that I've been working on the gold medal. This is a day that has been a long time coming but it has been well worth the wait. When the ghost army soldiers were landing at Omaha Beach when they were setting up Inflatables in the rain near the front line in breast when they were freezing in the Snows outside Bastion or drawing fire on the gothic line in Italy. They would have been shocked by the idea that 80 years later A Grateful Nation with honor them in this way because no soldier who served in this unit considered himself a hero. I have talked to many veterans of the ghost Army and each told me that the real heroes were the Infantry men in the tankers Who Bore the brunt of the fighting but it is always struck me that the ghost Army deception Mission demanded a special kind of courage to project strength. When you have none to purposely draw enemy fire to keep it from falling on others a Dane.
