## Transcript

South by Southwest started in 1987. South by Southwest interactive was traditionally the smallest part of South by Southwest, but over the last few years we have, grown significantly and now have the biggest pool of registrants of any of the three southwest, southwest events. I use to say, well it's impossible for a geeks to compete with a rock stars and film stars, what's interesting, 2011 and 2012 is the geeks have become a. Rock stars and film stars. [ MUSIC ] I am the director of the South by southwest interactive festival. We are a technology event, but we are ultimately an event about creativity.

[ NOISE ] The line between the ( no period ) Music side of the fans and the interactive side of the fans and the film side of the fans is harder and harder to discern. And it's a mix for a very, very creative stew. We were lucky enough to have a Twitter launch here in 2007. A few years later Foursquare launched south by southwest in 2009. Their success, and the fact that they came out at South by Southwest has really, I think, done a lot to increase our profile. You know, I just want you to talk a little bit about the role Facebook is playing in the world now. The thing that we are trying to do, at Facebook.

Mark Zuckerberg spoke here when he was still fairly new on the scene. And a lot of the crowd was using twitter to communicate within the crowd of how disenchanted they were with the interview. Walk around like we're interested. [ LAUGH ] It was one of the first times where people could really see the power of the social network to communicate in a way they've never communicated before. [ SOUND ] We would have liked that that interview be remembered for better things than that. Try doing what I do for a living, guys. But for a lot of people it was very eye opening and just in terms of the dynamic of how social media changes.

How audiences and crowds react. The social media and social networking tools that this community has had to use have become so much more powerful. We've developed this thing called the panel picker where we encourage the community to send in presentation ideas. We then post these online. And the online community ultimately votes on these ideas. Each year we've done the panel picker, we've seen more ideas come in from all over the country and all over the world, and more people participate in this thing. This year we had something like 125, 000 votes over the space of about a month. That's our most ever, and it's helped enforce that notion that start- ups can come to Austin during South by Southwest and meet the kind of people who can take their.

Career to the next level. What's certainly exciting in this industry is seeing how quickly things change. I mean 2007 when Twitter came on the scene, sure it was cool but who knew how much power that could have and will continue to have. There will be something that happens at Southwest, Southwest 2012 which we won't particularly pay attention to but may be the biggest thing in 2013 or 2014 is the power of the people are coming here and the ideas they have and how those ideas have changed all these traditional content industries. That we have. Yes [ MUSIC ] [ NOISE ]
