## Transcript

Israel's former Prime Minister began a 19 month jail sentence on corruption charges. Ehud Olmert surrendered himself to the prison in central Israel. The 70 year old was convicted of accepting bribes during his time as mayor of Jerusalem. To further a controversial real estate project Ulmer was also convicted on an obstruction of justice charge for pressuring a witness to not testify against him. He was originally sentenced to six years in prison, but is real supreme court reduced the sentence to nineteen months. Before turning himself in, he appealed to the Israeli people to remember his efforts to create a better future for his country during his time as prime minister.

The charges forced him to resign from office in 2009 which reportedly undermined what were considered to be promising peace talks between Israel and Palestine. Omer is the country's first Premier to be sent to prison
