## Transcript

[ MUSIC ] Keeping a balanced budget and staying on top of life responsibilities is incredibly important if you want a secure financial future for you and your family but it's also hard work To many it can feel like there's no light at the end of the tunnel, no room for error, and definitely no room for fun I recently got a message from Renee and Peter, who have been married for 30 years, own a home, and are dedicated parents to two teenagers. The only thing missing in their life is actually getting to enjoy it. Renee and Peter work so hard to provide everything they can for their kids and their future that fun isn't even a consideration.

They know they need to strike a better balance between their financial responsibilities and living life, they just don't know how. My name is Peter Liciaga and of course this is my wife, Renee. My husband and I live in Mount Laurel From New Jersey. We have two wonderful kids. A tween and a teen. I'm a martial arts instructor and I help run a martial arts school .

>> I freelance, actually, as a choreographer. And I also mentor and coach the next generation .

>> We have a mortgage and I'll probably be paying it until I retire. Which I'll never retire. My fear is I'll leave when I die, my kids are going to be paying for it. Probably for like another 25 years. Before I actually pay it off. I see myself working until my whole life, and I don't have a problem with that, but at least taking a vacation. That would be nice! Peter and I have been working very hard to make sure that our children do have what they need in this household, has what it needs financially and everything else wise, but For us we're realizing that we're kinda missing out on life and just opportunities for us to be together as a family.

And to enjoy basically the fruits of our labor, our hardwork. Yeah, we really want more time to play, have fun, enjoy each other's company. And maybe even travel a little and we really enjoy life. We need your help, Jeff. René and Peter have already taken the most important step, which is to admit they need a better balance between work and play and ask for help. For others out there looking to make some more room in their lives for fun, here are some things to consider. First, talk with your partner about what you feel are the biggest burdens standing between you and the life you want to lead.

If you're worried about your mortgage payment, consider refinancing your home. If you're concerned about your retirement, think about opening a Roth IRA, which would allow you to save tax- free for retirement while still being able to access those funds for college tuition. [ SOUND ] Then start a fun fund. Commit to putting a certain amount of money away every month. And get the whole family involved. Come up with something you'll do as a family once your fun fund reaches a target amount like a vacation. Whatever you need to do, commit to it and make it non- negotiable. It takes work to build more fun into your life, but the payoff is worth it.

That's why I'm going to meet with Renee and Peter to help them get to their desired destination. Stay tuned. [ MUSIC ] [ BLANK_AUDIO ]
