Today on Dumb Money, what's all this talk about the Fed's interest rates? I'm here to answer the money questions that you think are too silly, stupid, or scary to ask. I'm Taylor Tepper, and this is Dumb Money. Okay, there is the institution called the Federal Reserve, and it is really, really important. The Fed is the nation's central bank and has [ MUSIC ] Two objectives. To keep long term inflation stable, and maximize employment. That means it's job is to ensure that as many people as possible who want a job are able to get one. [ NOISE ] And that prices over all don't go up or down too dramatically for too long.

The main way the Fed gets its job done is by controlling short term interest rates. These rates can affect how much it costs you to borrow money for your mortgage, or your credit card, or your car. When interest rates are higher, people tend to borrow less money and the economy slows down. Lower interest rates are supposed to encourage borrowing to give the economy a boost. That's the theory anyway. Ever since the Great Recession, interest rates have been at or close to 0 %. The economy was so bad the Fed made it as cheap as possible to borrow money to get folks to spend it. More spending means more demand, which is supposed to mean more jobs.

And the Fed has been somewhat successful. Job growth has been pretty impressive compared to other large countries. But low interest rates mean that savers get the short straw. When interest rates are low, banks aren't willing to pay out a lot of money, simply for the pleasure of holding on to your cash. So savers have been stuck with low interest rates over the past eight years or so. After years of no rate rising, the Fed raised short term rates slightly, in December 2015. These decisions have far ranging effects on people's desire to buy stocks and bonds and a host of other assets which is why you're hearing about the federal line [ MUSIC ]
