## Transcript

The Provisional IRA, the IRA of the 1970s used violence that many of us would consider to be terroristic. And they used that violence to put pressure on the British to withdraw from Northern Ireland and to bring about an independent, united sovereign country, free from British rule. This was a Sunday the people of Northern Ireland will not forget. [ NOISE ] It all started when Catholics organized a demonstration to protest the continued interment of suspected terrorists. The demonstration, as all demonstrations, was banned by the government. It was intended to be a protest which was not about using violence, but when some of the marchers stopped and threw stones at the soldiers, it led to a dramatic and awful over- reaction.
