## Transcript

Well, I think to make the album unique because of so many versions of 'Gypsy' out there, they decided to include songs that have never been heard before. They were cut out of town and that would be an incentive for people to buy this particular album as opposed to, you know, Tyne Daly's or Angela Lansbury's because it had more Jule Styne, Stephen-- Stephen sometimes songs in it. The best way to record a cast album is to give the performers enough time to understand their parts, so that when they go in-- and then when they go into the studio, perform live with the orchestra. So you're not actually changing anything.

You're performing the way you would at night. You're performing with your orchestra and you have the information because you have lived in the part for a while. When I recorded 'Evita', I think I was only six weeks into the show-- six or seven weeks into the show and I didn't really know the character. And on top of which, I recorded to a tempo established by the composer. And in the case of 'Anything Goes' and in the case of 'Gypsy' the conductor, the orchestra, and the performer established the tempo together and there's a-- and a phenomenal energy in what they call a live performance. If the work is exceptionally good, then everybody involved in the production hopes it will be recognized in some way whether it is a Tony Nomination or Drama Desk Nomination or Grammy Nomination or an Emmy Nomination.

And when they do get nominated, it's a great feeling. You know, there you're doing something that you love with the company you love, with an orchestra you love, with the conductor you love, with Arthur Laurents, Stephen Sondheim and Marwood Stein. You know, history is being made just by being in the recording studio looking at these people. And it was-- it was great, fun. It was-- the whole production has been a blessed experience, so the recording was just icing on the cake. The fact that we got to record it and the fact that we did record it in a day and it came out as well as it did.
