FedEx is now facing drug trafficking charges after a federal grand jury indicted the shipping giant Thursday. The company has been charged with helping illegal online pharmacies by knowingly delivering prescription drugs to customers who didn't have prescriptions. The indictment filed in a California federal court alleges FedEx conspired with two online pharmacies for a decade. The US Justice Department said in a press release Thursday, FedEx knew it was delivering drugs to dealers and addicts as early as 2004. FedEx first disclosed the year's long Federal investigation in November 2012. According to USA Today, prosecutors say FedEx ignored at least six warnings from members of Congress, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Food and Drug Administration, and other Federal agencies.

That their services were illegally being used to ship drugs like oxycodone and hydrocodone, but FedEx says it isn't in the wrong. The company spokesperson said in a statement, it is innocent in the charges against it. And that FedEx has cooperated with law enforcement for decades to put a stop to illegal drug activity. The government is suggesting that FedEx assume criminal responsibility for the legality of the contents of the millions of packages that we pick up and deliver every day. We are a transportation company, we are not law enforcement. We have no interest in violating the privacy of our customers.

Last year, UPS agreed to forfeit $ 40 million as part of a settlement to avoid the same charges FedEx is now facing. The Atlanta based shipping company also promised to take steps to stop illegal online pharmacies. From using its delivery services. If FedEx is found guilty of the 15 counts against it, the company will face a fine of at least $ 1. 6 billion dollars, along with restitution and forfeiture of profits. Thanks for watching.
