And one reason is because they think they can't afford it. Here to talk about how to plan and pay for your vacation is Jill Schlesinger. Thank you Jill. Great to be here. Be here. Jill, let's talk first about how do you make a smart vacation budget? How do you figure out what those costs are going to be? I mean, we can't all fly to Paris for a long weekend. So you gotta look at where you stand, right? And be realistic. A lot of people when they're doing their annual budget will make a line item for travel or vacation. And they might just do a quick bit of research, not a ton but enough to really get a sense, hey, how much will it cost for me to take the family to the Grand Canyon or to Disney? Or. If I have a big special birthday, to do a big European vacation. Just you wanna look at what your average cost might be and then be sure to plan for it. Okay, so what are some of the gotchas they might not be planning for, they might not be accounting for? Well I always say the biggest gotcha has got to be breakfast, which is the biggest rip off ever in a hotel. So you want to make sure that you're including all of your meals. Costs of museums, in some cities totally free. Other cities you're gonna have to pay up. What about these excursions? Sometimes you're in a place and you say it's great, I I've got all of my money planned out and then you're like, No, I want to do a helicopter ride down into this canyon. Be careful about those extras. Are there any savings tips for someone who's trying to put that money aside? A lot of people are very disciplined. They say, you know what I'm just going to make that part of the money I said aside in my checking or savings or money market account, and when I need to go on vacation, there's the money. However a lot of people don't like to commingle these funds, and what they do is they setup an automatic monthly draft out of some out of their pay or out of their regular savings or checking, put it in that account and it is sacrisent, so they know when I have to pay the bill, it's there. What if money's really tight this year, should you just forgo the vacation altogether? We actually are not doing ourselves any favors by not taking that vacation time. Alright, maybe I've got two kids in college at the same time and I can't afford to take the big trip. Maybe I will do the staycation. I will be a tourist in the place where I live, but you know what? By and large, most people who say, " I can't afford it ." haven't really gotten creative, either. So there are plenty of places to go where it is cheaper. If you're staying home, shut down, don't check the email, treat it like a real vacation. And try not to do your dopey errands either, don't go into the dry cleaners on your vacation even if it's a stay- cation. Thank you so much Jill, great ideas. Thank you.
