## Transcript

Stretching eastward from the headlands of North Africa to the China Sea is a vast spiritual empire whose symbol is the star and crescent of Islam. Living in 25 countries all over 200 million Mohammaden, bound together by a common faith, that God is Allah and Mohammad is his prophet. Once great and powerful, masters of the lands in which they live, the Islamic people though shown of their temporal power are by their very numbers and their religious unity, still a force on the world today. While Europe still dreads the possibility of a holy war, a general Muslim uprising to overthrow Christian rule.

As throughout all her colonial history, France is experiencing minor Muslim outbreaks in her North African empire. Native demands for self- government, which today are being largely inspired by fascist Italy thus the cross to Mediterranean. And in the British mandated holy land at the eastern end of the Mediterranean, there is more serious trouble, a well- armed Arab revolt against Jewish immigration into Palestine which has already caused hundreds of lives. Openly sympathetic to this Muslim uprising is the same influence, fascist Italy. Only a few 100 miles away in Egypt, longest sphere of British control, Italian penetration has created a political force opposing everything British.

The rising nationalism has already forced Britain to grant Egypt self- government. Extremists are demanding that England withdraw even the troops, which by treaty she is allowed to base in Egypt while the defense of the Suez Canal, her vital trade route to India and the Far East. Today, around the Mediterranean approaches to this 104- mile waterway, the naval powers of Europe have concentrated their fleet. There is scarcely a harbor in the Mediterranean that does not shelter man of war. From Port Said to Gibraltar, islands and shores are being hurriedly fortified. Or in the fascist- inspired Muslim unrest, Europe sees the background for war- shifting in 1939 from Central Europe to the Mediterranean.
