## Transcript

Life is expensive but it doesn't have to be. I'm on a mission to help solve America's money problems one doorknob at a time. Here we go. Hey Kate. Hey Pharnoosh. Meet my friend Kate. She just turned 30 and her biggest pay point when it comes to money is her cable bill. She pays nearly $ 170 a month. For a super- up plan. It includes over 200 channels, DVR, plus Wi- Fi. Her goal? Trim the bill without giving up her shows. Challenge accepted. So, now, Kate, do you even care that you have 200 channels at your disposal? You know, I really don't. Maybe I watch 15 or 20 of those on a regular basis. Well then, in that case, have you considered maybe.

Switching over to Hulu or Netflix or Amazon Prime? I do have Netflix and Amazon Prime. But, I just really like having a DVR and having my shows waiting for me and I like to watch stuff live, like the Oscars or the Grammys. Okay. Good. So, you don't want to give up anything Right Have you maybe considered just calling your cable provider and asking for a discount? I actually have not ever done that Alight, that's where we're going to start Okay So, first things first, Kate. I want you to log into your cable account. Get into the chat room and start talking to a representative. I find this can sometimes be faster and easier than say, picking up the phone and calling the 800 number.

So, now, just introduce yourself and ask them flat out if there are ways to help you save. A couple things to keep in mind: 1 ) Be straightforward, 2 ) Always be nice. And, don't settle at all. No matter what. Don't settle. Got it. Happy to say, Kate had some success. She connected with Shannon, who was eager to help. She offered a promotion code. But due to technical failures, she couldn't change the bill herself. Instead, she gave us a special number, which got us straight to customer service, in under two minutes. Hi, thank you for calling. My name is Anne how may I help you today. Hi, my name is Kate and I'm wondering i you can help me to lower my bill or even just change my plan to make it more affordable right now.

Yes, I can switch you on [ CROSSTALK ] The whole conversation took less than 30 minutes and in that time Kate managed to score a 12 month promotional rate. That shaves $ 15 off her monthly bill. She also got free ad ons including faster internet and free HBO for the entire year. Altogether a $ 300 value. There was one sticking point though. The $ 40 price to have a technician come to her house to switch out her modem. And what's the charge to have the technician come out? It's $ 40 Don't settle. Don't And, there's now way to like, can you waive that fee? [ MUSIC ] Yes. Okay. Great. Thank you so much.

That was awesome Oh my God. Fabulous. High five. Thank you. So, what you saved 180 bucks? Yes. Free HBO, WiFi, the list goes on. How do you feel? I feel really good. And that was so easy just to call. I kind of can't believe how easy it was. I know. And so, I'm really excited to try that with some of my other bills. Good thinking. And that's a wrap. How about you? What's your biggest money struggle? Tell me on Twitter @ Farnoush and use the # FinFix, and I might just come knock on your door. Next. For Money. com, I'm Fortis Tarabi. [ MUSIC ]
