## Transcript

From the beginning of man's life on Earth, there have been but two generations: the old and the young. And throughout the world's history, in every nation and in every time, the lives and fortunes of the young have been inevitably ruled by the dictates of the old-- who have called upon youth to enforce their aims and impose their will. Of all the world's youth in 1940, non are more fortunate by birth right and inheritance than the 21 million boys and girls between the ages of 16 and 24, who constitute one vast and glamorous society, America's youth. Today, no one portion of the American population is more consistently admired than its young men and women.

More articulate than any previous generation, America's youth of 1940 is making its influence felt in the affairs of the nation and the world. Noisiest youth group of the year has been the American Youth Congress, whose 3, 000 delegates under a left- wing leadership, descending upon the national capital to lobby for government- made jobs and the $ 500 million subsidy. Dramatized the plights of the nation's 4 million jobless youth. In Washington, this youngest of the nation's pressure groups and listed under the banner of CIO John L. Lewis, by its open display of red sympathy, embarrassed their adopted mother,

>> Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, and was finally sent home with a Presidential spanking.

>> It has been said that some of you are Communists. That is a very unpopular term today. As Americans, you have a right, a legal and constitutional right to call yourselves Communists-- those of you who do. You have a right, peacefully and openly, to advocate certain ideals of theoretical Communism. But as Americans, you have not only a right but a sacred duty to confine your advocacy of changes in the law, to the methods prescribed by the constitution of the United States. And you have no American right by act or deed of any kind to subvert the government and the constitution of this nation.
