## Transcript

You may have noticed everyone on the Internet seems to be dumping a bucket of ice water on their head. But do you know why? The ice bucket challenge gained massive popularity after being taken up by Boston college baseball player Peter Freight who suffers from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. ALS causes nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord to die, making it hard to walk, speak, eat, and even breathe. The ice bucket challenge is meant to raise money and awareness for ALS charity. Once a challenger nominates someone they either follow through with the challenge themselves or they're encouraged to donate to an ALS charity.

Some of the biggest names in business have participated. Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, nominated Bill Gates and Netflix's Reed Hastings just before he doused himself. [ NOISE ] That was really cold. Twitter CEO **** Costolo posted this Vine of him accepting the challenge. I just got challenged to stomp out ALS. And Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella posted this YouTube video of him taking the challenge as well. One, two, three, no white flags. Apple's VP of Marketing tweeted some pics of himself taking the Ice Bucket Challenge while calling on Apple CEO. Tim Cook to participate. And the challenge seems to be helping.

The ALS Association says it has received about $ 4 million dollars in donations since the trend started, compared to just $ 1 million dollars in the same time frame last year. I'm Loren Gores. Thanks for watching.
