He's a musician and a music instructor of classic Iranian instruments. But in the violent aftermath of the recent elections in his home country, he'd become politically engaged as never before. >> I arrived in France in 1986. >> Ten years ago, on a visit back, he saw first- hand the student protests and resulting government crackdown that until this month, were considered the most serious since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. >> I was in the street, I was in the bazaar and I saw hope. They killed the young people just for-- because they >> asked, they want liberty. >> The 44- year old still has family and friends there, including his brothers and sisters and their kids as well as his own 17- year old French- born daughter. In the violent aftermath of the elections, the Iranian community here has been quiet vocal along with other French citizens in demonstrating against the Iranian government's actions. The protest on this day began at the site of the Bastille, strong symbolism as France's own first steps toward democracy >> began on this very spot. -[ Foreign Language ] -" Before the election ," he says, " I made my music, I gave my lessons. I wasn't politically engaged but since all these happened, every day I take to the streets. Look at Paris, >> the first day, how many of us who were there? Now look, there are more and more people every day ." >> Like so many others, Mozhgan Amuzgar has been using Facebook, Youtube and email to stay in touch with family and friends in Iran and follow the news. >> Actually, I didn't even go and vote because I felt that I have-- I-- people like me who left Iran more than 30 years ago, I felt that I have no-- nothing to tell to my fellow >> countrymen and women because they lived the Iran- Iraq war and they lived what-- all the horrors that happened in Iran. Their voice has to be heard everywhere, internationally. That's why I'm active now. Otherwise, I'm not a person who is politically active. >> The protest brought together a few thousand people of varying opinions. Some, criticizing the violence and oppression of the regime, considered >> the election a fraud and wanna see opposition leader Moussavi elected. Others think that nothing will change if he was and want to see a democratic revolution. Also taking part was Marjane Satrapi, the author of Persepolis, the graphic novel and film about growing up in Iran. She spoke of the Iranian community in Paris. >> We didn't have so much of solidarity >> before that. And for the first time I saw the Iranian gathered together, all of us we are defending the same value. We are defending, we are behind our people. And that's really gives of me a lot of hope, it makes me believe in the human being. >> She's optimistic in the long term but she knows that more tough times lay ahead. >> For every change, it will take a long time. I think that is something that has started and this thing is not going to finish tomorrow.
