## Transcript

I think you can't help but have a special connection with any product you make yourself. This hundreds of hours going into the boat, its part of me when its finished. [ MUSIC ] The reason I love kayaking is just being out on the water with nature as part of nature. With a motor boat, all the noise, you're excluding nature from the experience. With the kayak, it's silent. You're one with it. I grew up with canoes and kayaks. And when I got out of college, I needed a boat but couldn't afford one. So, drew something up on my parents' living room floor and built it. I like to use wood to build my boats.

It allows me a lot of design freedom so every boat can be individualized. And wood just visually has something going that attracts the eye. [ MUSIC ] The original kayak designers were the Inuits of [ MUSIC ] the Arctic. Their ideas still influence a lot of my design. The wood hearkens back to the original kayaks, but what I'm doing is really a modern composite material. As opposed to seal skin on driftwood. When the customer comes in, I first ask them a bunch of questions about what they imagine themselves doing with the boat. I can customize it 100 % for a customer. My design philosophy is trying to make a boat that performs well on the water.

And that can be a variety of things. It can be speed, or it can be surfing on a wave. It's the performance of the boat over aesthetics, but aesthetics is definitely part of it. I feel what looks good to the water looks good to the eye. I don't feel that I am an artist. I do still consider myself an engineer. But I feel that what I am creating has a lot of art to it. Might start with a few sketches. Then I go onto the computer and start to the sculpting, the design. I'll start by trying to get the performance I want out of it first. And that'll go a long way to describing aesthetic. [ MUSIC ] You know, I've thought about taking some of the skills I've developed and creating furniture or something.

But there's something about boats. A chair just sits there. A boat will take you places. I love all aspects of what I do. I love just sitting there designing it. I love creating the boat itself, you know, finding the perfect piece of wood and then being out on the water in that boat I created myself. It all comes together out on the water. [ MUSIC ]
