## Transcript

A disappointing setback in the case of the toddler who doctors thought was cured of the HIV virus. A Mississippi baby thought to be cured of the HIV virus is again showing signs of infection. It's a blow to doctors who thought they were on track to a cure. The girl who has only been identified as the Mississippi baby made headlines back in march 2013 after doctors said they found no trace of HIV in her system after 10 months of no treatment. Doctors treated the now four- year- old girl with an aggressive 3 drug cocktail of powerful medications for 18 months starting immediately after she was born to her HIV- infected mother.

The girl's mother suddenly stopped bringing her in for treatment around that time. But when doctors were able to track her down again, several months later, they were surprised to find the virus had not returned. They then declared her functionally cured, giving a strong ray of hope to the HIV AIDS research community. We believe that perhaps the initiation of very early antiretroviral therapy prevented the formation of the viral reservoirs in central memory CD14 cells that are a barriers to cure. But all that changed during a scheduled check up last week when doctors say they found the HIV virus had started to replicate in the girl's blood.

The National Institutes of Health provided funding to the researchers involved in the baby girl's case and despite this disappointing news, the director of the research facility said in a press release, they're not giving up hope on a cure just yet. Certainly, this is a disappointing turn of events for this young child, the medical staff involved in the child's care, and the HIV AIDS research community. Scientifically, this development reminds us that we still have much more to learn about the intricacies of HIV infection and where the virus hides in the body. The girl is now being treated with anti- HIV drugs.

Doctors say she will likely need to take them for the rest of her life, unless a definite cure can be found. Thanks for watching. I'm Cliff Judy.
