One minute you're marveling over your slab of plastic and metal. The next you're panicking over how much work you'll have to do to set it up and figure out how to use it. That experience does not need to be that painful. If you just got a new Android phone like the Samsung Galaxy S IV or the new HTC1, our ten step guide will leave you with a clean easy to use and fully functional phone without any clutter or noises. I'll show you a handful of our tricks but to check out the full guide head over to time. com. Come, your phone probably came with a Google Plus app, the Google Plus app is a great way to automatically backup your photos and videos to the cloud. So you don't lose them if you lose your phone, the one draw back however is you can bump up against storage limits, you can however set the Google Plus app to automatically backup all of your photos by ratcheting the resolution little bit. Head to the Google Plus App Settings menu and then hit auto- backup and set the photo size to standard. Now you can upload unlimited photos, cap out a maximum resolution. That's like a medium resolution that's still pretty good for viewing on just about any device. Android Device Manager is a must have, must use app. It's similar to Apple Find My iPhone feature. If you lose your Android phone, you can locate it on a map. You can play a sound if you lost it in your couch cushions. You can even remotely wipe all the data. To use it, go into your Apps menu, then the Google Settings app. And from there, go to Android Device manager. Make sure the check boxes for remotely locate this device and allow remote lock and erase checked. And if you lose your phone, go to the Android device manager website at Google. com / android / device manager, you can locate in the map. As they said play a sound, lock phone, wipe it all that good stuff. Widgets are arguably one of the best features of Android, these are interactive little mini app. Apps you place on your home screen that allow you to interact with see new information without actually opening up a new app. But put too many widgets on your home screen and you can run into trouble. So we're gonna tastefully, tastefully place some widgets. Like, we get a new car, we're not just gonna put bumper stickers all over it. We're gonna put those hilarious family ones with the stick figures, with the dad and the mom and the kids and the dog and the soccer ball, right? [ LAUGH ] They're great. Right? No, they're not? I actually don't like them either, but I'm trying to pander to as many people as possible and a lot of people have those on their CAR. Okay. Keep moving on. To go into the widgets, we're gonna go into the app tray, and hit the widgets tab and find a couple you like, then drag them onto the home screen. We can drag this clock on, we can drag the Google Now is actually a really good widget to have. It's got a lot of timely information that updates automatically. Ask any Android user who has not used this handy the ten step guide to set up their phone, and they will tell you that up in the notifications area of their phone, they are constantly being bombarded with little icons popping up, little messages here and there. This thing updated, whoop, whoop, how about this. We're gonna get a handle on notifications. Notifications can ruin your day by constantly bombarding you with information. Head to your phone settings menu and then under applications or apps, depending on the type of phone you have, make sure you are in the download tab. And then your gonna select any app you'd rather not hear from and uncheck the box for show notifications. Some notifications you may want, your email app for instance, you wanna know when you get a new email. But you don't need notifications for every app you install, cuz it's gonna just be, you're gonna have a bad day. So those are just some of our ten tips, we're scratching the surface.
