Candidate Alassane Ouattara won. But President Laurent Gbagbo refused to leave power. The international community supported Ouattara assisting with Gbagbo's capture after a five month military standoff. Civilians paid a high price. Some of the worst massacres occurred in the western part of the country. Survivors there revealed that both sides committed atrocities. [ SOUND ] [ FOREIGN ]. In March, mercenaries hired by Gbagbo's forces broke into a government building in [ FOREIGN ]. Where local people had gathered to wait out the fighting. The mercenaries killed dozens of people before moving on. [ FOREIGN ] Later, advancing pro- Ouattara forces reached Dukwe, a large town where people are historically pro Gbagbo. They killed somewhere between 300 and 1, 000 civilians. [ FOREIGN ] [ FOREIGN ] [ FOREIGN ] [ FOREIGN ] [ FOREIGN ] [ FOREIGN ] [ FOREIGN ] Thousands of refugees poured into neighboring Liberia. In Ivory coast, makeshift camps opened to host the displaced. The largest hosted 28, 000 people in Dukwe. Even though the refugees' homes are just down the road, many are too afraid to return. Their farms and houses have been destroyed. Their water has been poisoned by dead bodies. And their attackers are the same people who are now in power.
