## Transcript

I'm Cece Sun and I'm an editor at Time Magazine and with me today is fashion designer Prabal Gurung. He has designed for celebrities like Sarah Jessica Parker, Zoe Seldana, and first lady, Michelle Obama. Thank you for joining us today, Prabal. Thank you for having me here. How often is your name mispronounced, and do you correct people when they get it wrong? well, quite often. More often than you would imagine. Yes, I do correct them. And I don't expect people here to know, you know, the name. I get from Prabal. Somebody called me Pablo. [ LAUGH ] So I always say trouble with a P. So for the record say it for us.

It's Prabhu Gurung. You said, of your debut collection in February 2009 that you were designing clothes for a sinking man sex symbol, who is that woman? I would say someone like, let's say, Arundhati Nag, Zoey Saldana, Angelina Jolie. Karen Mulligan, Sarah Jessica Parker, Zadie Smith. Even some one like our first lady to Hillary Clinton to Leenew. And so for these intelligent aware women. What do they want out of clothing. What do they like about fashion. You know, what I like about them is. When I sat down with them, we had this intense conversation about art, like a little bit of politics, about the world, right?

But, when it comes to fashion, they're equally at glee and such thrill about and excitement about fashion, about dressing up. And, you know, that inherent sense of wanting to feel good, wanting to look beautiful, we all have it. Mm- hm. And that is consistent, you know. But it's just some, for some women, it takes over their entire life for them. It enhances. You said that dressing Michelle Obama the first time she wore a dress of yours, I think it was February 2010, was really about success for Nepal. Can you tell me what you meant by that? You know, Nepal the third world country and having seen poverty at such close proximity.

Like, you know, and then coming to New York and doing this and living my dream, that whole dream was validated by that action and gesture from the first lady. The fashion industry is often criticized for its lack of diversity in using minority models, in editorials, on the runway, in ad campaigns, As an Asian designer do you feel a responsibility, an extra responsibility, to change that anyway. As an Asian designer I don't feel an extra responsibility, I'm just aware of the how to say the lack of diversity, which is what you pointed out rather true. But what you have to understand is fashion refects a society.

You know, as the country, the Asian countries get bigger and more powerful. I think that fashion reflects that. You know? If you look at how it used to be, and how it is right now. Like, there's more Asian models. There are more Chinese models. If you look at fashion. And often than not, I think it's a reflection of what's happening around the world. Fashion is a cyclical and discrete by nature. By what's one trend that you never wanna see come back? Too tight, too short, too revealing, too how do you say too young for the age. You know, that kind of thing, dresses. So I hope that trend. That aging gracefully will come back and holding on to our youth and desperately goes away.

Do you wanna name any worse offenders? I think we all know who they are. I don't know [ LAUGH ] I would be unsavvy enough to know not to say that on camera. So, your uniform is the white t- shirt and jeans, which you're wearing today. I wonder is that influenced by, Catholic high school and wearing a uniform then. You know, I never thought about that. [ LAUGH ] This is the first time anyone has ever said that to me. But there's a comfort in knowing, the consistency of what you're going to wear and not having to worry about it. And that comes, probably right, from my all boys Catholic school, you know, where.

Which I had to wear uniform for ten years. And who makes your t- shirt and jeans? Jeans is J- Brand. T- shirt is always American Apparel. Yeah. So you finally got a chance to design for Oprah. In an address that appeared in here 2009 O magazine. What did you say to her when you finally met her? So I mean, I didn't want to like how do you say it. Cross that line of, you know being, from friendly to familiar. So I really just was quiet, then she tried on something. Then later on she, as we were talking, it was just her and I, and I just. Just told her I was like, I, I don't know whether I've, if I'll ever get an opportunity to tell you ever again.

But you know the reason why I'm here standing in front of you making something you wear, something of mine, is because you inspired me years, 13 years ago. Thank you very much for your time Prabal. You're welcome, thank you very much.
