## Transcript

Employers plan to hire 11 % more new college graduates this year than last year according to a recent survey. So what do these new college grads need to know about joining the labor force? Here to talk us through it is financial expert Jill [ UNKNOWN ]. Hi Jill. Hi. So what do they need to know? You gotta deliver the goods. You gotta give the appearance of working hard and deliver the goods and work hard, keep your head down, And as much as you want to actually give voice to hey I want to help out, I want to do this, be a team player. I know that sounds so silly because it's obvious, but it matters.

So be willing to do anything. Nothing is beneath you especially in that first job. How important is that first impression? I think it is important, so you really have to work hard. To present yourself and be part of the culture. Your job in the beginning is not to change this organization, it's to become part of the organization. Help them out and be psyched about it. And you know what, when you do that, it's amazing how many opportunities will flow your way. The enthusiasm, Something is really interesting, people just get a good vibe from you. Sometimes it's not that you're the smartest person it's that you're willing to do anything and nothing is kind of too much for you.

I just want to say one other thing, be clear about the cultural cues in the organization. You know what, if your boss comes in at 8 o' clock in the morning and says, don't worry everyone else comes in at ten. I'd get my **** in there at 8 o' clock in the morning. Do what the boss does. Totally. So what about this crazy word, this loaded word, called networking? People are freaked out about it. What does networking even mean, what do they need to know? Let's forget about the word networking. How about we just say we are building relationships? And you do that every day of your life. Networking shouldn't be about you asking for stuff.

Networking should be about you becoming friends, building relationships with your peers, with your bosses, with people up and down the food chain in the organization. Because this is not your last job. You're going to have a lot of jobs. And all of these people could lead to your next position. It's interesting because you're in your career for thirty years or so, and when you get that new job, you feel like you have to just start climbing the ladder. But really, you just need to settle down and start Building relationships. A really good piece of career advice that I once got was be willing to go sideways to work with someone you really think is a great person.

That lateral move with a better mentor sponsor could be a much better position than the one you're in today. So let's say you don't have a job yet, should you become a barista? I tend to be the kind of person who says don't wait for your dream job. And it's okay to do something part time. And also there is a energetic factor about going to work. Clearly have your plan to pursue what you want But actually working part time or doing something on the side, to me, that makes a lot of sense. And I think financially, obviously prudent for most people. And if you're more busy, you're more likely to stay focused on getting your resume out there, building up relationships.

Absolutely. And be clear about your getting a job is a full time job, and treating it as such. Being an intern, or a part- time gig, also a great way to get your foot in the door. Well thank you so much, Jill, this has been great. Great to be with you. [ MUSIC ]
