With the Winter Olympics in Sochi fast approaching, get ready for the half- pipe, the backside double cork nose grab, maybe even the double McTwist. Confused yet? Well, terminology at the winter games isn't just about the fastest time down the slope or scoring most goals, style points count especially in snowboarding. Let's start with the basics. You're about to hear a lot of numbers and the trick names as athletes spin through the air. They're just degrees. 360 means a full spin. This is a front side 720, front side meaning the snowboarder rotate his chest into the spins instead of his back, and 720 because he'll spin twice before hitting the ground.

The most common moves you'll hear during competitions will likely be combinations of spins and flips. The rodeo is a perfect example. Back side or front side you're still not just doing a flip, but spinning through the air too. Corks are cork screws mean the snowboarder or skier spin, puts them oriented sideways or upside down in the air. Now as far as who to cheer for, that's not nearly as complicated. Two time Olympic gold medalist, Shaun White will still compete in the half- pipe despite dropping out of the slopestyle competition just 2 days before Sochi's opening ceremony. USA Today says, with White dropping out of the slopestyle, the Americans to watch are now Sage Kotsenburg and Danny Davis.

It also notes Kotsenburg belongs in the campus stressing snowboarding style instead of trying for the largest number of spins and flips per jump. Legendary female snowboarder, Gretchen Bleiler is quick to point out half- pipe walls are now 22 feet high and 600 feet long. So falls can cause devastating injuries. Oh, and if you hear that someone shredded it out there, don't worry about what kind of trick they did, all you have to know is it was a good one. I'm Christian Bryan.
