## Transcript

My name's Marco Grupp. I'm a contract photographer for Time Magazine. And, I live in New York City. The 9 / 11 portraits of resilience, is a documentation of the stories of 44 people, in different way affected by 9 / 11. Either that day, in September. To the ripple effect what happened after it. I just happened to be looking towards the south, towards the Statue of Liberty. What I saw there is a plane coming eye- level, eye contact towards me. Marco? Yeah. Alright, Marco. Hi, how are you? I'm doing pretty good. Call that a field. Yeah [ LAUGH ] Good. [ NOISE ] When you're the leader of an organization you've gotta be resolute.

Compassionate. And it, and you gotta know what you need to do. If Curt isn't even writing skills... But I... It's my first multimedia project with oral history, and photography combined. And so what we're trying to do is get folks such as yourself, to reflect on what you recall about those events and what's happened since then. [ UNKNOWN ] that we preserve. The idea of a full photo portfolio, and just try to keep it as straight [ CROSSTALK ]. I definitely agree with that. They both have like, great eyes there. I maybe [ CROSSTALK ] that's maybe the one. Photography as, as much as I love it, it's very silent.

It is very powerful, but you will never be able to, to connect the dots between stories. And I only can, capture those thoughts with oral history. In 2003, an American attack on my house. I lost my arms, and my body is, burned. There were many sad moments. But there was a resilience, always in the room I was most moved by the Richards family. They moved me beyond anything I've ever done, actually, in my 25 years of portraying people. I was trying to call home. I couldn't get through right away. And when I finally did, I remember, my mom, right away, said When I lost Jimmy, and, I just broke down.

It was the worst thing I could hear, that he was blindsided. This one, this one was the son. He was the son of Jim Richards, Jimmy Richards. And he found, they found him That one's great! For me portraiture is very delicate. You have just a little little time to capture this. I always say it's like a little flame and, and, and you have a lot of wind. These first couple seconds where I, I try to generate a intimate moment where they become Kind of fragile. [ SOUND ] There you go. There are other things I suppose that I think my time might have been somewhat different, if it hadn't been for 9 / 11.

But I just wanted to let the viewer make decisions. Let just the faces be on itself, and even more so than we do normally. To put them on the same level. To, to make a firefighter as large as, as a president. This project is the quintesential story a portrait photographer could work on. When somebody opens that portfolio and goes through these pages, or through the website. Ideally it makes them think, how did we all deal with it? How did families deal with it? How did the country deal with it? How did the world deal with it? If it helps people to understand each other a little bit better. We achieved more than I could ever wish for.
