## Transcript

>> You have worn so many different kinds of men's wear from Yohji Yamamoto to do your own. I just wanna know what-- how you discovered Tom Ford's clothing and what made you like it so much.

>> Basically for me, people told me. First just start and tell me about the sunglasses and the perfume people [ unk ], and that's a beautiful sunglasses. I love the smell. And then when the shop opened, let's have a look. And it fitted, so I thought it was the right moment. There was some need for a fashion change in the air. I was a little tired of narrow shoulder and the thing like this. I suddenly liked this post- Italian update of modern look. What I had when I was very young and I bought it not only for me, also for friends who are like my children, and it was hard for me to see boys, sorry, sorry-- 5 years younger than me, dressed what I used to wear certified look, but in a modern updated way because Tom's clothes have nothing to do with the old clothes.

It's the idea of them and to spare the mood, but it can evoke, but in fact, it's made differently and ready to wear. This quality didn't exist in there. You had to fit 40 times before you had a few. If there's something I hate is to be touched by strangers. I never have clothes tailored to me.

>> What was the inspiration for the shape?

>> Well, Karl said something that was-- I was glad to hear him say, was that they were weightless on the body because they have more English cut or line, but yet they're made in Italy and they're made in a very light way because they've come quite spoiled in our culture. If you wear new English suit, I mean, it will really give you a back ache. It looks great, but it's very stiff to construction and it kills your shoulders. So we become a little spoiled in our culture, men's wear, in particular, because of course, we've come up with a period, you know, in the 70s and 80s when Armani dominated men's wear which is very soft.

And it spoiled a lot of people and we've become obsessed with comfort. I actually don't like that. I think you should suffer a little bit sometimes to be attractive and beautiful. So I cut the clothes very slim because I like to feel the clothes on my body and felt people who aren't used to wearing that, the moment you put them on, you will feel that the armhole is high, you feel the jacket on your body. But I was glad to hear Karl say that they're really light, and they should be!

>> And this is the most important part for well cut clothes.

>> And you know the thing--

>> It's going to follow you up when you bring the arm up for the garbage can.

>> It's true. A high armhole, a lot of people think, is actually restrictive. But it gives you total movement because it's cut right up to.

>> No. The arm has to follow your will but not reject it.

>> So is it an English kind of hybrid Italian?

>> It's a hybrid. It's a hybrid. The cut is probably, if you would look at it, more derived from an English cut, but made in an Italian way with lightness of fabric and construction.

>> I like the idea that you took that mood and then other technique. We think, just like Chanel. Chanel is nothing else, then the jackets of people who work in the hotel, you know, hotel where she used to go near [ unk ], and the [ unk ] and she transformed it with a better cut into the Chanel jacket. You know, what's important is the inspiration, but it's also what you do with the inspiration and making distinct merit, in the Italian, he created something, what now we go for as a comfort suit. I doesn't-- nobody else does it. For me, American fashion and the look of American elegance with the updated image with the body, it's Tom.

>> I'm very sorry.

>> Because I like, there may be other, but I don't wear them.

>> Now Tom, one last question for you. What made you start this label with men's wear as opposed to women's wear?

>> I couldn't find any clothes to wear. You know when I left Gucci and I left [ unk ], I could not find any clothes to wear. I was having my clothes made with an English tailor. I was arguing and fighting and struggling with them to get them to make them the way I want them to be made. I'm a fashion designer, so I can go in and draw-- hell, and argue with them about the shoulder and tell them, yes, you can do it. You have to do it this way, but most people can't. So I realized there was a niche in the market, and there wasn't actually a company or designer that had addressed men's wear in a serious way from head to toe, and really, you know, whose intention is to dress men for all facets of their life, in a very broad way.

There was no one that had done that really since Giorgio Armani and Ralph Lauren, and both are of a different generation than my generation and no one had done that in a long time. So I saw a niche in the market and the need for myself, so I created really a collection that I wanted wear. A store that I wanted to shop in, and a way of shopping that was my ideal way to shop with the hopes that other men would respond. And luckily they have.

>> I'm not saying it's all [ unk ] flawless. When you go there, it's a pleasure to go there. They all are imitations and [ unk ]. They speak like [ unk ], but it's not ridiculous, it's not funny. But for me, he started [ unk ] what he said. You know, Chanel did clothes because she wanted other kinds of dresses. So if Tom is not [ unk ], he started with men's clothes because he wants clothes for him, but not--

>> Thank you! But I also want to flatter Karl a little bit too because it's not fair that you're flattering me. I'm not getting to flatter to you, because what I did was also meant to be for men. Maybe the closest to equivalent is Chanel; what women has with Chanel in that you can go into Chanel, you can buy a beautiful piece of ready to wear clothing, or you can also have something from your couture collection that's really made for you. Men didn't have that, and you have incredible service. And you want something delivered and it comes in a beautiful little Chanel truck and a beautiful box in the back.

We have beautiful little Tom Ford trucks with big boxes to go in the back.

>> You [ unk ].

>> We, you know, in a sense, men have never had that level of service.

>> No, it's true.

>> That the women have had for a long time at Chanel, for example. So there was a certain influence. And Karl, by the way, too, I get to flatter you a little.

>> Thank you.

>> Karl, by the way too--

>> No, but I think it's very important that if you pay a higher price, you pay also the place where you shop. You pay for the box, the pleasure of getting things cushioned. All this is-- that is luxury. Luxury is not to find something in a gift shop for very little. It's fun to have it in divine condition. And there is a price for [ unk ].
