## Transcript

As services like Netflix continue to surge in popularity, the fight to be king of the hill in online streaming is well underway. [ FOREIGN ] Netflix's latest move is toward Europe, where the streaming service is expanding to France and getting some backlash. In 1993, France introduced a policy called cultural exception, which among other things requires TV producers and other distributors in France. To give a percentage of its revenue to France's film industry. It also requires at least 40 % of the content be of French origin. But Netflix's European headquarters is in Amsterdam, which in theory will keep the American business from dealing with France's cultural exception laws.

According to The Telegraph, Netflix not adhering to the tax policy has prompted serious criticism from the French film industry. And from distributors. Meanwhile on this side of the Atlantic, potential big news from cable juggernaut HBO and its streaming service HBO Go. HBO is considering offering a stand alone plan. Subscribers could pay online access to shows like Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire and Girls. Without having to buy more expensive cable package When asked about separating HBO Go from it's cable subscription service at a conference Time Warner CEO Jeff Bucus said " The Question you're asking is becoming more viable, more interesting.

We're seriously considering what is the best way to deal with online distribution ." Which as fortune points out, is a big change from last year. When Buka said a standalone streaming service won't be attractive to most people. While HBO doesn't report subscriber numbers, we do know that it brought in $ 2. 7 billion in revenue, from the first half of the year. That's even better than Netflix's hall of 2. 2 billion, for more than 35 million US subscribers.
