[ SOUND ] Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen, you'll excuse the fact that I'm out of breath, but about 10 or 15 minutes ago a tragic thing, from all indications at this point, has happened in the city of Dallas. [ MUSIC ] In Dallas, Texas, three shots were fired at President Kennedy's motorcade in downtown Dallas. [ SOUND ] This is Walter Cronkite in our news room. [ SOUND ] And if you'll excuse me if I give some directions, and we talk about what we're gonna do here for the next few minutes, but, Bobby, let's tape this, if you please, particularly the interview with the eyewitness people. It is being taped, good. The first reports say that President Kennedy has been seriously wounded by this shooting. You'll excuse me if I am out of breath, a bulletin, this is from the United Press in Dallas. President Kennedy and Governor John Connally have been cut down by assassin's bullets in downtown Dallas. There has been an attempt, as perhaps you know now, on the life of President Kennedy. He was wounded in an automobile, driving from Dallas airport into downtown Dallas. You take it from the top, Bob, and tell us everything that you know, if you would please, in chronological order. Starting at the very top, unless you have some late information on the President's condition. All we know is that at roughly 12: 45 or so the shots were fired. Central Standard Time? I think it would have been Dallas time. [ INAUDIBLE ] Yes, it would have been Dallas time. It has happened within the past. Yes, within the past twenty minutes or so. They were riding in an open automobile when the shots were fired. The President, his limp body carried in the arms of his wife, Jacqueline, was rushed to Parkland Hospital. And the latest word is that, they are still alive. Representative Albert Thomas, a member of the House of Representatives, said he was informed that President Kennedy and Governor Connally are both still alive after having been shot in an assassination attempt. A word just in from Congressman Jim Wright of Fort Worth, says that he understands that both President Kennedy and Governor Connally, while seriously wounded, are still alive. Beyond that, again, there is no particular or unexpected reaction here yet because most of Washington has just found out about it and is shocked and stunned along with everyone else. The report is that the attempted assassins, we now hear it was a man and a woman who have fired the shots, were on the ledge of a building near the Houston Street underpass. A youngster said that he saw a colored man fire three times from the window of that building. They say that he was a white man. Go ahead. Put the phone on it. There were a lot of Negro people around, but the man seen in the window was a white man. Finally, one of the officers found a small colored boy who said that he saw a man fire, from about the fourth floor window, of the School Depository building. Now a white man only has been escorted from the building. Hold on there, Bob. I think we have a gadget here, Frank. Put the receiver on that Frank and apparently it will function as a speaker. [ NOISE ] And let Bob talk. There is an unconfirmed report, Eddie, that the President is in critical condition, that Governor Connally has gone to the operating room. Moments ago, authorities took a young man into custody. They took him to the County Sheriff's office, near the triple overpass, near where the shooting occurred. We have this information, which adds up to something rather inconclusive. It says the Secret Service said the President remained in the emergency room, and the Governor was moved to the general operating room of Parkland Hospital. As you can imagine, there are many stories that are coming in now, as to the actual condition of the President. One is that he is dead. This cannot be confirmed. Another is that Governor Connally is in the operating room. This we have not confirmed. We have just learned how ether, ever, that Father Huber, one of the two priests called into the room has administered the Last Sacrament of the Church to President Kennedy. [ INAUDIBLE ]. There is the report, in Dallas, you heard from our affiliate there, Eddie Barker, that the President is dead, but that has not been confirmed by any other source. And as late as 15 minutes ago, it was reported by aides outside in the corridor that he was still alive. Excuse me, Chet, here is a flash from the Associated Press, dateline Dallas. Two priests, who were with President Kennedy, say he is dead of bullet wounds. Word just came to us a minute ago. The word we have is that President Kennedy is dead. Substantiating this, but not confirming it, is a report about five minutes ago by the Dallas Police Department to all of its officers that the President had died. White House Press Secretary, Malcolm Kilduff, has just announced that President Kennedy, died at approximately 1 o'clock Central Standard Time, which is about 35 minutes ago. We have this from Washington. Government sources now confirm that President Kennedy is dead. So that apparently is the final word. From Dallas, Texas, the flash apparently official, President Kennedy died at 1 p. m ., Central Standard Time, 2 o'clock Eastern Standard Time. Some 38 minutes ago. Vice President Lyndon Johnson [ COUGH ] has left the hospital in Dallas, but we do not know to where he has proceeded. Presumably he will be taking the Oath of Office shortly and become the 36th President of the United States.
