## Transcript

An unprecedented meeting is taking place at the Vatican Sunday as Pope Francis hosts Israeli president Shimon Peres and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas for a symbolic prayer. Francis handed out the unexpected invitations two weeks ago during a three day visit to the Middle East, where he called for the recognition of a Palestinian state while avoiding the prickly details of what that state might look like. The unique ceremony is set to take place in the Vatican gardens and will consist of a Jewish, Christian, and Muslim prayer, followed by the planting of an olive tree as a symbol of peace. After the prayer, Vatican officials say that time has been set aside for the group to meeting privately.

While they insist there is no political agenda behind the gathering, if any meaningful peace dialog were to take place, it would likely go on then. While the Vatican has expressed no expectations as a result of the gathering, a writer for USA Today explains, if he manages to make progress in brokering peace between Israeli and Palestinian leaders this weekend, Pope Francis, who has broken ground at almost every opportunity during his 15- month papacy, will have outdone himself. While the meeting seems to be a step in the right direction, many obstacles still remain. Earlier this year, an attempt at the peace process unraveled as Israeli and Palestinian leaders never really came close to an agreement despite the Obama administration's active involvement in the talks.

But for Francis' supporters, the details of this meeting and where it may lead to down the road are less important than the perception that Francis is willing to use prayer to take on any issue. Ahead of the gathering, Francis tweeted, prayer is all- powerful. Let us use it to bring peace to the Middle East and peace to the world. According to Vatican officials, the prayers will focus on three themes, creation, forgiveness, and peace. Thanks for watching, I'm Elizabeth Hagedorn.
