## Transcript

>> When cardiac arrest strikes, the victim typically collapses, stops breathing, or stops breathing normally and can't respond.

>> Sir. Sir.

>> Would you know what to do if you saw someone in cardiac arrest?

>> Immediately start CPR, beginning with compressions.

>> One, two.

>> Doing CPR is not hard. Anyone can do it. And now, the American Heart Association is making CPR easier than ever.

>> The American Heart Association is revising its emergency response guidelines, and urging rescuers to start with the chest compressions first. And in some cases, doing away with the ventilating breaths completely.

>> In the past, people have been reluctant to perform CPR because either they thought mouth- to- mouth was too complicated, or they felt uncomfortable with, for hygiene reasons, doing mouth- to- mouth. Studies were done that showed that actually, chest compressions alone did just as well compared with compressions and mouth- to- mouth.

>> So, why is that? Is oxygen not as much a priority for cardiac arrest patients?

>> Directly after cardiac arrest, people's blood actually has a good amount of oxygen in it already. So, the respirations aren't that important. What's important is to keep that oxygenated blood circulating through the body. And you can do that with compressions.

>> These guidelines apply only to those patients in cardiac arrest, is that right?

>> Correct. So, this doesn't include patients who are-- have drowned or have inhaled like a foreign body, sort of when they're eating. It's just for patients who just collapse unexpectedly out of nowhere. It helps when you have other people available. If it's just you alone, you're gonna have to do these three things yourself-- which is first, activate 911, then find a defibrillator, one that's close by. You're gonna apply the defibrillator and see if it tells you to shock the person. And then, the third thing is immediately to start compressions. People usually worry that they're gonna break ribs.

And there's sort of just all these clicky feels when you're doing good chest compressions. Don't worry about that at all. Actually, if you do good car-- good CPR, you're gonna break a couple of ribs.

>> So, let's see what a good chest compression looks like.

>> So, first, someone should be on a flat and solid surface. If you haven't been trained in CPR, you can really just put your hands right in the middle of the sternum or the breastbone, interweave your fingers, and put your body directly over the sternum. So, you're letting your body weight apply the pressure. And you're gonna go in pretty deeply. Two inches is a lot. And you have to let the chest come all the way back out before you actually compress again.

>> Thanks very much, Dr. Wilson. I think that will help a lot of people feel more comfortable with performing chest compressions. And if you ever find yourself in a position to help someone in need, remember that a dispatcher can walk you through the chest compressions and that they could help to save a life.
